We don’t just accept differences. We explore, highlight and dive deep into what makes each of us unique.
We believe in causes that are greater than us. We ask: what can we do to make things better?
We know that we do not know. We learn something from every experience and every person we meet.
We challenge each other to take responsibility. We give each other all of the support we can give to succeed together.
We promise nothing but our best shots at everything, big or small. When we still miss, we go again.
Majulah. It’s the call to action of an entire nation. A nation full of hope. A nation filled with dreams. Majulah is a Malay word that is often translated as “onwards” and is a part of Singapore’s National Anthem, Majulah Singapura. It’s a call for change – beginning with ourselves and extending to the world. At Majulah Community, we believe that every single youth deserves a platform to make a positive difference in the world. But this isn’t something we could ever do alone! To make this happen, we want to work with educators, mentors and youth changemakers – like you. So if you believe in the power of change (while having a lot of fun along the way), you are a part of the majulah community.
And together, let’s continue to change the world by empowering youth. Let’s continue to majulah!
On 10 October 2010 (10.10.10), The Culprit (Khairu Rejal) registered Majulah Community as a company limited by guarantee/non-profit. We later obtained Charity status.
For the next 4 years, Majulah was entirely volunteer-run before it was decided that a team of Professionals could bring our vision further.
In December 2014, a flood devastated Kelantan, Malaysia. The disaster sparked action amongst Majulah changemakers who raised funds for necessities, with a small team also making the trip to deliver it personally.
Since then, Project Peduli has continued to inspire youths to take the lead and create impact locally and overseas.
We ran the Youth Space @ ITE Central from 2015 to 2019, in collaboration with Yayasan Mendaki and Community Leaders Forum.
YS was one of the first drop-in centres in ITE Central and was a safe space for students to hang out, be themselves and have fun with the Majulah youth workers there.
Majulah x Northlight School is one of our longest and most cherished partnerships, lasting until today (2021). We have seen many batches of mentees through thick and thin, with the relationships build lasting beyond the programme.
The mentoring programme included house visits, external outings, individual reports and would not have been possible without the trust of the committed teachers and staff.
We never previously had an office – which meant you could see the team working wherever we could find a space.
With the team growing, we secured two cosy tanks at Tinkertank for storage, huddles and a whole lot of fun. One particular joy was bringing changemakers to see our space with its rooftop view, metal factory on the first floor and other secrets.
When M3 launched with Empowering and Mentoring Youth as one of their focus areas, we were happy for the opportunity to be part of Project Soar, a pilot mentoring programme in Jurong and Choa Chu Kang.
Despite the pandemic derailing all our plans , Majulah worked closely with the passionate volunteers and mentors to provide support and growth by any means possible. Majulah continues to work with M3 for Project Soar, Empowerment Programme and others.
In our 10th year of continuing to majulah, a milestone was reached when we moved into Oxley Bizhub 2 and our own, private space.
Beyond just being an office, we wanted it to be a cosy place for youth changemakers to gather, learn and make plans to change the world.
As we continued to explore ways to realise our vision, the team took up the challenge of a brand refresh. We created a branding kit, revamped our website and focused on creating consistent content that serves youth changemakers.
With youths spending even more time online and on social media, this felt like the perfect time to do it.
Why is it important?
No one individual or organisation can change the world by themselves. As youth confront the challenges of a complex world, we see it as our responsibility to collaborate and form a support system for every single youth.
We believe it takes a community to empower youths, and to change the world.
Why is it important?
A survey conducted by National Youth Council, Singapore found that although 63% of youth were open to being part of a mentoring programme, only about 1 in 10 had actually ever been in one.
We believe that every youth – regardless of their past, environment and personality – would benefit from having a mentor who cares about, supports and believe in them. This is how we develop changemakers, who then continue to inspire others.
Why is it important?
Psychologist Erik Erikson highlights youth as the stage of development where two important parts of each individual are formed: identity and relationships.
A safe space to explore, grow and form positive identities and relationships isn’t just a privilege. It’s a necessity for every youth, and one that we work hard to create and maintain in every single interaction.
A call for like minded individuals to bring a positive difference in the world.
Beginning with ourselves and extending to the world.
The color of passion and growth, we believe that youths need to kindle the fire within themselves to develop as positive individuals. The color exudes warmth, and the importance of mentoring and guidance throughout the youth’s journey towards self-development.
The color of calmness and reflection, we believe that youths need to be exposed to the diverse opportunities and communities, which are as vast as the sky and the sea. The color exudes empathy, and the importance of volunteering with an open heart and mind.
The color of purpose and action, we believe that youths can champion for the causes that they hold dear, lighting the path for change in society. The color exudes humility, and the importance of serving the community to achieve brighter futures.
